My first job was 4 years ago (2019), asking grocery shoppers to donate to HipHopforChange, so that brown and black people can have tools to express themselves creatively.
I had no work experience, and they employed me.
I quit that job after one day.
I took a month off, and applied to be a Whole Foods Dishwasher.
They emailed me, I set up a time to interview at the store.
I remember being early, being in my Nissan Altima, putting my focus on gratitude.
I thought, “Man, if I can’t get this job, I don’t know if I can get any job.”
I made an impression on Jim, a Whole Foods team member.
He asked if I had any questions, and I asked,
“When is the second interview, can I have it now?”
I followed him into the kitchen, where I met the Prepared Foods Manager.
They showed me what I would be doing with, and what I would be dealing with in the dishroom. It was a physically demanding job.
They offered me the job, when we got back to the Whole Foods seating area.
When covid shut the world down,…
I resigned for the following reasons:
#StayHome, slow the spread, flatten the curve.
My colleague, said I could talk to my supervisor; they would give me my job back — I didn’t want any chance at being rejected.
I even said hello a few times when I did see her, we would greet each other, and we’ll smile.
In August 2020, I briefly worked for the US 2020 Census. ($25 an hour)
I completed training for a week, did one census for a family, and resigned.
In September 2020, I went back to work, at Whole Foods, where I did the dishes, as an Amazon Prime Shopper.
I picked up a part-time as a Nordstrom Warehouse Associate, in April 2021 too. Due to my physical disability and request for accommodations, the employee relations manager transferred me to become a cashier at a Nordstrom store. I then, resigned.
In September 2021, I got a job as a part-time job as a Guest Experience Representative for the Golden State Warriors. We were champs in 2022, and I even got a ring :’) I got an invite to be part of the championship parade, and choose joyfully, to celebrate with friends.
GSW Guest Experience team helped me land a full-time job, with a salary.
1 year in, I am reflecting on my work journey and looking at my next steps.
